TRUE to his word, Richard Williamson who was being called ‘The Student’, proved he was too good for Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers, ‘The Teacher’, earning himself a unanimous decision victory, when the two met in the 23rd edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, in collaboration with the Guyana Boxing Association ProAm truncated card, last Friday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Plaisance native Gladwin Dorway was set to face Mark Austin for the national junior middleweight title, a contest that did not materialise after Dorway was deemed to be medical unfit by the ringside doctor, during his observation in the dressing room.
According to reports, Dorway, whose family has a history of heart-related problems, registered a heart’s rate far below the normal rate of a normal adult, reading 43 beats per minute; whereas a normal heart rate would read between 60-100 beats per minute. Hence he was forced to withdraw from the contest.
The young and upcoming pugilist, Williamson taught his coach Rogers a lesson in the finer arts of boxing using stiff jabs and power punches to earn a lopsided unanimous decision victory over his diminutive tutor.
To add insult to injury, Williamson, who hones his skills at the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym in Berbice, used his superior speed and skill to land several telling blows to the head and body of Rogers, who was relegated to a punching bag as he absorbed several servings of leather throughout the six-round bantamweight affair.
Even though Rogers enjoyed a few far-flung moments in the fight, Williamson’s reach, coupled with speed and power in both hands, simply overwhelmed his 39-year-old coach, earning him a scoreline of 59-56, 59-55 and 50-54 on all the judges’ card at the end of the contest.
Anson Green landed a thundering right hand to the jaw of debutant Derick Richmond that sent him crashing to the canvas, to earn his second win in his three-fight career.
After three punch-filled rounds between both pugilists, the end came at 2:45secs of the fourth and final round just seconds after Green was deducted a point for holding by referee Dexter Torrington.
Dillon Allicock rebounded from a unanimous defeat at the hands of Williamson last July in his debut bout to register a scintillating TKO win over Charlton Skeete.
After Allicock cornered the taller Skeete and landed a series of unanswered head and body punches at will, referee Franklin Brisport wisely put an end to the bout at 2:05secs in the second frame.
