GOVERNMENT is set to table the Justice Sector (Amendment) Bill at its sitting today of the National Assembly. This piece of intended legislation, seeks to allow for appeals of rulings by the Full and High Courts. Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon, at his post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the President Wednesday, said that this is an issue that has been resolved with similar enactment in most of the Commonwealth democracies.
Today’s Sitting will see the business of the opposition taking precedence over that of the government. As outlined in the order paper, the House will be deliberating on the Former Presidents’ (Benefit and Other Facilities) Bill.
Additionally, two motions are slated to be discussed; one, on the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate a decade of criminal violence, and another on the appointment of a Heritage Commission.
Dr. Luncheon said that while these are matters, which are priorities of the opposition, are significant, they will prevent or at least delay consideration of government’s business, which are of unquestionable importance to the development of Guyana.
Government Bills that are pending include: the Firearms (Amendment) Bill, the Local Authorities Election Bill, and the Deeds Registry (Amendment) Bill. (GINA)a
