POLICE, at the request of Acting Town Clerk, Carol Sooba, last Friday, conducted a raid at Stabroek Market Square, where 36 men were arrested. The exercise followed several complaints by owners that their stalls had been broken and entered.
A quantity of ‘pronto leaves’ along with gold jewellery, two welding torches and 100 cell phones suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained were seized from the men held.
Sooba told the Guyana Chronicle, yesterday, that members of the City Constabulary have cracked a major racket in which a group of men from Alberttown, another city ward, who have been carrying out a spate of burglaries at Bourda Market were detained.
She said, early Monday morning, an alert City Constable, Samuel Scotland was stabbed and injured when he confronted a man on the roof of one of the stalls.
Scotland had tried to apprehend the suspect and was attacked and wounded in the chest but managed to arrest him.
Two men were charged yesterday and two others, who also reside in the Alberttown area, are being sought, Sooba said.
STILL HOSPITALISED
She said Scotland is still hospitalised and his condition is being monitored but he had an x-ray yesterday which showed that the knife did not penetrate his chest and so the injury is not life threatening.
Sooba explained that pockets of men in several sections of the city have been engaged in consistent burglaries at both Bourda and Stabroek Markets where stall owners have been robbed of millions of dollars in jewels and other items.
She said the Mayor & City Council (M&CC) has noted, with great concern, the attitude of some stallholders who occupy several shoe stalls but do not, actually, vend footwear but pay rent to keep the space and are engaged in other things.
Sooba said she has convened a meeting with the Clerk of Markets and they will be looking at the situation in which stalls must be used for the intended purpose.
She said she is very pleased with the police intervention last Friday in which the Stabroek area was cleared of some unsavoury characters, who are involved in various activities around the market and its environs.
