OLPF project moving apace with 26,320 distributed

THE One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) project is moving apace since its commencement in 2011, according to its Communication Officer Stacy Carmichael-James. In an interview with Guyana Chronicle, she reported that, to date, 26,320 computers have been distributed.
Carmichael-James said the scheme was able to reach its distribution target last year and, this year, it is hoping to distribute 28,000 more by August.
She said the programme has been having a positive impact on the lives of Guyanese, with many success stories and features accomplished all across Guyana.
Carmichael-James said OLPF representatives have been into different regions speaking to beneficiaries and there are reports that children are better able to perform academically, now they have a computer in their home to assist.

RESEARCH
She said students from university and other institutes have lauded the programme, noting that it has allowed them to do their research in the comfort of their homes.
Carmichael-James, however, said reports claiming that there are households with multiple laptops are not accurate.
She said, in the second phase of the disbursement, the income bracket for eligibility will be raised to $100,000.
Prospective applicants can uplift forms from the headquarters in Forshaw Street, Queenstown, Georgetown and on the OLPF website.
She added that, up to now, the OLPF has received 50,670 applications from across Guyana and, to date, it has verified 46,703 of those and more are coming forward as persons see the benefits of the programme.
Carmichael-James was non-committal, though, when asked about investigations into the missing laptops. Last year, 150 were allegedly stolen from the OLPF warehouse at its Forshaw Street headquarters.
It was reported that six staff members were sent home with immediate effect to facilitate investigations by the police and, in November, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon said they will have to undergo polygraph tests.
There has been no public disclosure on the matter since that pronouncement.
