Health Ministry concluding Cancer programme January 30

THE Ministry of Health will be wrapping up a month long programme surrounding cervical cancer awareness with a vigil at Public Buildings on Brickdam, Georgetown, on Wednesday, January 30. This follows the recently concluded National Week of Screening during which the ministry took equipment into the workplaces of some 233 women.
The locations at which the testing exercises took place included Qualfon, Ashmins Trading, Bank of Guyana, Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Camp Stephenson and Camp Ayanganna bases, and Public Buildings.
Senior Medex Zetta Alberts, in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle on Monday, revealed that eight percent of the 233 women screened had positive legions and were treated immediately.
She said another 0.01 percent was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) for suspected cancer and for follow-up management.
The medex further stated that an additional 150 persons were sensitised to the disease during the National Week of Screening.
She added that, apart from the activities in and around Georgetown, there were activities in the outlining areas of Regions Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) and Six (East Berbice/Corentyne).
According to her, these included additional screening and sensitising.
As part of its cervical cancer awareness activities, the Health Ministry will also be conducting a blood drive at Public Buildings today.
The Ministry, as well, is making a small donation of walking aids and pampers to the Periwinkle Club, a local cancer support group.
The month of January is being observed internationally as cervical cancer awareness month under the theme ‘Early detection saves lives’ while this year’s motto for the Ministry is ‘Get tested, get results and get your life back.’
