Joint committee to push Guyana/Brazil projects –among them Linden-Lethem road, deep-water harbour, hydropower

A TECHNICAL team from Guyana is to be named next month to work with others from Brazil on some projects which will be mutually beneficial to both countries.

It follows his recent visit to the neighbouring country, President Donald Ramotar announced Friday during a press conference at Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.
He said that while in the Federative Republic, he met with President Dilma Rouseff, and they discussed what he considers some of the very new important programmes that are coming closer to fruition.
According to him, they include the road, the deep water harbour and more hydropower facilities.
“All of these possibilities are there and, hopefully, early in the new month, I will be establishing a technical team from Brazil and from Guyana to start to work and to try to bring these things into operation as early as possible,” the President stated.
Mr. Ramotar pointed out that the discussions with his Brazilian counterpart were preliminary and it is expected that they will go into more details when the joint committee is set up.
“It’s at the initial stage but we hope that this committee can move things at a very rapid pace. I believe  that there is willingness on both sides to move forward,” he stated.
In addition, President Ramotar said some of these infrastructural projects, such as the hydropower facilities, will mutually benefit both Brazil and Guyana.
Meanwhile, he also related that all of the financial arrangements for the Amaila Falls Hydropower project have not yet been concluded. However, he added that they continue to work hard with the hope that, by the second or third quarter of the year, those can be finalised.
