THE Interim Management Committee (IMC) of Anna Regina township will be moving swiftly to collect rates and taxes for this year from all residents between Three Friends and Walton Hall on the Essequibo Coast. At its first statutory meeting for 2013 Thursday, the body approved a recommendation for priority to be given the collection of revenue, promptly, by the end of February.
The IMC also decided that notices demanding payment be sent to ratepayers, reminding them to meet their obligations before February 28.
IMC member Rajendra Prabhulall called for strong measures to be taken for the garnering of rates and taxes, noting that without the money they cannot function.
The IMC also agreed to have face the community meetings in every ward within the town so that residents can be updated on development within and, at the same time, listen to problems facing them, in terms of drainage, garbage disposal, roads maintenance and environmental issues.
The meetings are to begin this month and other IMC member Pooran Persaud, who supported the call for face the community fora, said some ten co-op societies within Anna Regina owe millions of dollars in arrears for cultivated areas.
The latter urged rice farmers to pay up while proposing that the Local Government Ministry quickly address the issue of revaluing new and renovated buildings.
Persaud pointed out that the township now has new and modern buildings and factories and still the valuation for rates and taxes is outdated.
The IMC wants to collect all that is due for 2013 and previous years so that more development work can be undertaken.
IMC Treasurer Maureen Clark has supported the proposition for demand notices to be served on defaulting ratepayers and it was agreed that staff will distribute them house to house and collect what is due on the spot.
