THE Regional Administration plans to distribute 40,000 educational flyers throughout Region 5 (Mahaica/Berbice), as part of a renewed public awareness campaign on the importance of proper solid waste disposal.
Regional Chairman, B. Bisnauth said that and other elements of the drive, with a new emphasis, will begin in a matter of weeks and include enlistment of both radio and television support in the bid to promote encouragement of a garbage free environment.
He made the announcement just before the signing of a contract for the development of a landfill site at Zorg-en-Hoop, West Bank Berbice.
The deal was signed in the boardroom of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development last Friday and Bisnauth disclosed that the region had made arrangements with two other contractors to develop two more landfill sites in the region.
One of those is at Burma Road, East Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara and the other at St. John, West Coast Berbice.
The Burma Road location will accommodate solid waste of residents between Mahaica and Mahaicony while the St. John’s would cater for what is disposed of from East of Abary Bridge to Fort Wellington on West Coast Berbice.
The Zorg-en-Hoop facility is for people resident between Ithaca, West Bank Berbice and Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
The contractor, Advanced Environment Solution is set to begin developing the site at Zorg-en-Hoop between now and February 1 and has been given a 10 years lease, for which $300 a barrel will be charged for garbage disposal there.
The flyers, which are now being printed, will serve to inform residents across the region about the new initiatives which Bisnauth said is the result of a partnership involving Central Government, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and the Private Sector within the region.
