Despite Government injunction… M&CC will continue with recycling plant project – Mayor Green

THE Mayor & City Council (M&CC) will continue with its plans to have Cevons Waste Management construct a recycling plant at the disputed plot of land in North East La Penitence, despite Government’s injunction.

altThis was stated by Mayor Hamilton Green, who said the location was supposedly acquired by the M&CC from the Government in exchange for the Luckhoo Swimming Pool site in Kingston, where the Marriot Hotel is currently being constructed.
Green said Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall sent the M&CC a notice of eviction last Friday, stating that the occupants have to “quit the land” since it is owned by the National Sports Commission (NSC).
But, speaking at a media briefing on Monday, the Mayor maintained that the recycling plant will be of benefit to the city as it will aid in garbage reduction.
Green pointed out that, in a normal day, the municipality collects on average 250,000 tonnes of garbage but, during the Christmas season, that amount usually doubles.
He stated, further, that he is very much disappointed with the action, on Christmas Eve, which saw the Haags Bosch dumpsite being closed at 13:00 hrs, hindering additional garbage collection efforts.
The Mayor said the municipality has requested that the Local Government Ministry have the Haags Bosch dumpsite open on a 24-hour basis, since it is critical to the clean-up campaign.
He announced that the M&CC will be embarking upon a second phase of the campaign in the garbage ridden city and called for much public involvement.
Green said the last such effort was not successful because it lacked community involvement.
Asked about the election of a Deputy Mayor, Green responded that there will soon be an elected Deputy Mayor but did not elaborate on the process to select the candidate.
