DOUBLE upsets were witnessed on Friday night when action in the Guyana Football Association (GFA) Banks Beer Knockout 2012–2013 Cup, continued at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground.
In the curtain-raiser, Blueberry Hill FC defeated Ann’s Grove 3-2 in a thrilling encounter then Riddim Squad beat last year’s fourth-place finishers Beacon United 1–0 in the feature showdown.
Blueberry Hill’s victory means they have qualified for the round-of-sixteen and move on to face Northern Rangers FC for a spot in the quarterfinal tonight. Riddim Squad’s victory took them into the quarterfinal round where they will face last year’s runners-up, Fruta Conquerors.
The Blueberry/Northern Rangers match tonight at 18:00hrs will precede the feature showdown at 20:00hrs between Santos FC and the University of Guyana team. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the GCC ground.
On Friday night in the feature, Riddim Squad FC were led by an Amos Ramsay goal, which was scored in the 31st minute that eventually led to Beacon United’s defeat. The National junior’s goal was one the opposition had no answer to, as they tried quite hard to pierce the opposition’s energetic defenders.
In the opening match Ann’s Grove Allstars took the lead very early when Oswald Duke scored in the ninth minute. However, Blueberry Hill’s Troy Miller equalised in the 15th minute then they went ahead in the 44th minute with a goal from Romel Bristol.
Ann’s Grove then levelled the game again four minutes into the second half when Kevon Barry found the back of the net. They ultimately gave away the battle in the 86th minute with a deflection off Travin Daniels which was ruled as an own goal in Blueberry Hill’s favour.
