Stabroek Market jewellery trader robbed & knifed to death in broad daylight

KELVIN Caines, 42, a jewellery buyer and seller of Lot 40 Durban Backlands, Lodge, Georgetown, was robbed and knifed to death by a man outside the Stabroek Market yesterday afternoon.

Caines was reportedly stabbed numerous times as he tried to ward off his robber/attacker. The incident happened in full view of many, after 15:00 hrs yesterday.
The man’s brother, Sophia Bamfield, speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, said a neighbour told him that his sibling had been fatally stabbed by an assailant known to him, who had reportedly snatched a sum of money he had in his hands.
Bamfield added that his brother was reportedly standing outside the Stabroek Market when the suspect robbed him and stabbed him in the stomach, before escaping with the cash.
Rushed to the Georgetown hospital, the father of two was pronounced dead on arrival.
Bamfield said his brother had been buying and selling jewellery at the entrance of the Stabroek Market for many years, and had been well known.
Interestingly, Caines, who also resided in South Ruimveldt besides Durban Backlands, lost his girlfriend to kidney failure this year.
