MR Royston King, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), said the Council continues to work to clear accumulated garbage from commercial areas in the centre of the city, as part of the clean-up campaign for the city.
He told this publication in a telephone interview yesterday that the lack of resources has restricted the clean-up exercise to only the Stabroek, Bourda and Cummingsburg areas; but even as those areas are cleaned, persons and business entities continue to dump large amounts of garbage there.
King stressed that the Council has a standing appeal to citizens to desist from engaging in this environmentally unfriendly practice, as its continuation will jeopardize the health of the nation.
On behalf of the M&CC, King expressed appreciation to those business persons who are assisting the Council’s clean-up exercise by providing trucks and equipment.
Some businesses which have been offering assistance to the Council include John Fernandes Limited; Hand in Hand Trust; Nigel’s Supermarket; and Continental Agencies Limited.
Earlier this month, Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green revealed that the city would be split up into 10 wards, within the boundaries of Agricola and Cummings Lodge, to facilitate a 10-day clean-up exercise.
King related that the clean-up exercise would be conducted in the other areas after the holidays.
