HOUSEWIFE Melessa Christain, who slapped a child who, allegedly, interferes with her daughter, was fined $10,000 with the alternative of one month imprisonment on Wednesday. Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo imposed the monetary penalty at New Amsterdam Court in Berbice for the November 29 offence.
The court was told that Romanda Holder, a student at St. Therese Primary School, was on her way home when the defendant held on to her and gave her a slap across the face.
In the courtroom, the defendant told the magistrate that the child was in a habit of interfering with her daughter and would even taunt her as they attend the same primary school.
Christian claimed that she would make reports to the virtual complainant’s mother but never got any satisfaction.
But the child’s mother, who had accompanied her daughter to court, denied what the defendant said and added that she would always discipline her offspring in the woman’s presence but the latter was, apparently, dissatisfied with the punishment. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
