AT the continuation of the wife poisoning-porridge murder trial, yesterday, the judge and jury heard that when told about the case, the wife, Gem George Eastman, unhesitatingly said “I don’t know anything about that.” Detective Corporal Stephen, the man in charge of the investigations who related this to the mixed jury, also said that he had found poison at the home of the deceased. He said that Parmanand Singh, a sales representative of Caribbean Chemicals, where the poisonous liquid was bought by the accused, was present in the store when a witness, in the presence of the accused , pointed out the representative as well as a bottle of the poison.
But when called to give evidence yesterday, Singh declared that he had looked all over the court and did not see the person (the accused was in the dock) in court.
Singh also denied that Stephen had shown the accused to him.
And when Detective Stephen was called by the court, Parmanand said, “I know not the man.”
Gem George Eastman, 50, a former security guard, is on trial for the murder of her 33-year old husband, Aubrey Eastman, who died from poisoning, administered to him between the 1st and 31st October, 2007.
The motive for the killing is said to be jealousy, in that the accused suspected her husband of having an affair with another woman.
Following the death of Eastman, Cpl Stephen said he contacted Gem George Eastman at the East La Penitence Police Station.
He told her that it is alleged that she had administered to Aubrey Eastman poison, whereby causing his death on November 1, 2007, at the Woodlands Hospital.
According to him, “as she was about to reply, I stopped, cautioned her and told her of her rights. She then replied saying, “ I don’t know anything about that”.
She declined to make a written statement. She was placed in custody and later charged.
Witness said that on November 3, 2007, at about 09.15hrs, he held a confrontation between Claudette Forde and Gem George Eastman at the East La Penitence Police Station, whereby Claudette narrated her story as per statement, and Eastman replied saying, “I don’t know what she talking about”.
The story she narrated was that she, Gem George Eastman and others were friends, and that sometime during the month of October, Gem told her that she was having problems with Aubrey Eastman, and that she had gone with Gem at a place on Croal street to buy poison, when Gem told her and others that she normally put the poison in porridge, medicine and other food she gave to Aubrey Eastman.
Prosecuting are Mrs Konyo Thompson and Miss Renita Singh, while Mr. Peter Hugh is defending.
The hearing continues today before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed jury.
