YET another team lifted the title of the Guinness Greatest of the Streets on Saturday night as the defending Champions, Back Circle, lost by the slimmest of margins to the new champions Leopold Street in the final. The first half Omallo Williams-goal scored in the 13th minute was the question which the opposition had no answer for thus leading the eventual victors to the top prize of $600 000 and title of Georgetown champions.
Back Circle’s 0 – 1 defeat at the hands of the Leopold Street was quite disappointing following such a good preliminary round and knockout stage. Their defeat came just months after their 2 – 0 defeat in the final of the Regional Greatest of the Street Tournament.
They had to settle for the runner up prize of $300 000 while West Front Road demolished Broad Street B in the third place showdown to cart off with $200 000. Broad Street B claimed the $100 000 fourth prize.
Broad Street drew first blood as early as the sixth minute through a Jimmy Gravesande strike but it was answered in the ninth minute when West Front Road’s Sheldon David recorded the first goal of his double. Michael Oie scored in the 17th to give West Front Road the lead before the half.
When play resumed two quick goals in the 21st minute from David and futsal dominator Leon Yaw put more than enough distance between them to comfortably take third place.
Earlier in the night, the fans got their Futsal appetite tempted with the exhibition tournament that saw GT Masters defeat Clippers Barbershop 2 – 1, then Guinness Bars defeated Upper Level Barber Shop by the same margin in the feature match.
Scoring for GT Masters were Mark Anthony and Sherwin Scott, while Clippers Barbershop’s lone goal was scored by Timothy Telford.
