Government will the tabling an amendment to the Customs Act in Parliament which, will bring equity to the administration of the tax in relation to plastic beverage containers, according to Presidential Adviser on Governance, Ms. Gail Teixeira, Acting on behalf of Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, Teixeira told media operatives at last Friday’s post- cabinet media briefing that the amendment is a very simple one it is still very important.
“The current situation that unfortunately obtains, applies only to imported plastic beverage containers and not to those that are locally manufactured,” she noted.
Pursuant to Guyana’s obligations under CARICOM and CARIFORUM it is required to remove any form of discriminatory treatment to regional goods. This amendment to the Customs Act would bring the country into conformity with its obligations.
