GUYANA Tourism Authority (GTA) Director, Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh notes that the GTA will be partnering with the Ministry of Local Government in an effort to tidy up the city and spruce up its surroundings for the season.
He made this disclosure in an interview with the media yesterday at the GTA office at the Sophia Exhibition Site, where he said that, in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government, the GTA has already deployed a team to assist with the clean up, and GTA would also be assisting with the further beautification of the city by helping to paint washed out and discoloured culverts around the city, which he said can sometimes be described as eyesores.
He noted that these activities are not just being planned for the holiday season, but are rather an ongoing project which will be sustained, and GTA will be there to assist in any way it can.
Haralsingh said he would like to appeal to everyone to take personal responsibility for their litter. He stressed that one should dispose of litter in a proper manner, and should adhere to the sayings that “Cleanliness is next to godliness” and “A dirty surrounding reflects a dirty mind”.
Haralsingh said it is important that Guyanese citizens should be very proud of their surroundings, and he stressed the importance of restoring Georgetown to the image of ‘The Garden City’.
He encouraged everyone to start caring for the environment, from corporate Guyana to minibus drivers and conductors, and even pedestrians and those who travel from Georgetown as a transit point. He said it is important to take the litter situation very seriously, and he reiterated that one should dispose of one’s garbage in a proper and sanitary way.
He said more persons should join in the “Pick It Up” campaign so that we can have litter-free surroundings which would be of enormous benefit to the city and country, as it would assist in the restoration of the image and glory of Georgetown.
In closing, he said that garbage is quite a disgusting sight and it would never boost the tourism economy and help in the betterment of Guyana.
