THERE is a wicked and nefarious campaign in Berbice, especially on the Upper Corentyne, to create an environment of instability and destabilisation, which must be urgently addressed by the authorities.
As reported in the Chronicle and other newspapers, the Upper Corentyne area has been faced with a series of blackouts over the past months, and there is no end in sight, despite promises after promises by GPL’s senior management, its CEO Bharat Dindiyal, and the Berbice Manager, Ayube Bacchus.
The Guyana Chronicle rightly pointed out in its editorial on this matter on November 12, 2012 that blame must be placed squarely on the shoulders of middle management at GPL, which, as its Editor so eloquently placed it, have “their own agendas of destabilisation.”
One would have expected that the AFC and APNU, which claim to be concerned with the interests of all Guyanese, of all racial groups, would have been vocal in calling for an end to these endless blackouts which are hurting everyone on the Corentyne.
Instead, not a word has been heard from AFC/APNU on steps for improvements. These two parties, which have prominent members from the Corentyne, such as Kemraj Ramjattan, Moses Nagamootoo, Rishee Thakur, etc., have totally ignored the suffering of this area, which is predominantly Indian, even though its criticism of the government saw no end during the Linden crisis.
Why is that? Why is AFC/APNU silent now, but not when Blacks were suffering? Is it that AFC/APNU are, as we’ve long suspected, only concerned with the interests of one particular racial group? Is it because they don’t care about the Upper Corentyne and its citizens? How could these two parties, which hold the majority in Parliament, so completely ignored the plight of innocent citizens who are suffering endlessly at the hands of incompetent workers at GPL?
To make things worse, I saw AFC and APNU members gloating on Facebook and other social media that the blackout crisis on the Upper Corentyne would result in a loss of support for the PPP. How cruel and callous could these individuals be? These two parties, instead of fighting to
improve Guyana, are rejoicing at the sufferings of their fellow citizens? Instead of trying to help improve this situation, they stay silent and hope that all the blame would be placed on the government, and that its supporters would turn away from it and join the AFC/APNU.
I am convinced that AFC/APNU is only using the constant blackouts on the Upper Corentyne for political gain only, and that wicked men are doing everything possible to stir up strife and racial antagonism in this area.
I am appealing to President Donald Ramotar to immediately intervene on the Upper Corentyne and in GPL to ensure that this company is cleared of all workers with agendas of destabilisation, and that the PPP would prove to all Guyana that it is the party for all people, and that it will not be shaken off its plans of progress by wicked men who only care about grabbing power through the backdoor.
