ARMED bandits severely beat and robbed a goldsmith of Ocean View, Uitvlugt, on the West Coast Demerara on Saturday night.
The goldsmith, Suresh, (one name only) also known as Michael and visibly shaken, told the Guyana Chronicle that on the night of the robbery he went out and returned home about 20:45hrs and shortly afterwards a yellow Raum pulled up in front of his home and he proceeded to go out of his yard to find out who it was.
Two men armed with guns exited the vehicle and approached him. Suresh said he moved to the side of his gate, outside of the yard, and began screaming for help. One of the bandits then came up to him and began gun butting him at the back of his head, inflicting serious wounds,
The other bandit went in the yard and approached his wife Wellama Suresh, who was in a hammock, snatched her gold bangle, demanding cash and jewellery.
The two bandits then took Suresh and his wife into their kitchen which is situated on the lower flat of their house, again demanding to know where their cash and jewellery were, to which they replied there was none in the house.
The bandits took them up the stairway to the upper flat of the house. Then a cell phone on one of the bandits started ringing, and this caused them to leave Suresh and his wife and run away.
Suresh explained that after the 15-minute ordeal, neighbours told him that a third bandit was stationed a short distance from his house, presumably on watch and he may have made the cell call to warn the bandits in the house that help was on the way for Suresh and his wife.
Suresh said the police responded quickly and this may have been responsible for the bandits and the vehicle used in the heist being apprehended.
He also said that his wife had retrieved her bangle and some $30,000 and a few pieces of gold were missing from his home.
