– bold convict tells magistrate he is not mindful of four-year sentence since he calculates he would spend only three years in prison
A MAN was sentenced to four years imprisonment yesterday after he pleaded guilty to stealing a motorcycle.
Roger Samuels, 46, of Lot 10 Water Street, Agricola, Greater Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and declared he had no intention to waste the court’s time.
The charge against Samuels stated that, on November 18, he stole CC58, valued $300,000, property of Toni Bentley.
Police Corporal Seon Blackman, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant parked her motorcycle in her yard and went to bed. The following day, she discovered that it was missing and, based on information received, the police investigated the matter and arrested the defendant who was in possession of the motorcycle.
However, Samuels told the court that, around 02:00 hrs, he went into Bentley’s yard and removed the motorcycle.
He said, while on the road, a police patrol stopped him and enquired about the machine and he lied to them. They took him to a Police station where he spent 72 hours.
Samuels said he decided to plea guilty and finish the story because he is tired of all the ‘push around’.
INVOLVING MOTORCYCLES
He revealed that he had several simple larceny cases involving motorcycles and other articles and was previously convicted on two charges.
Samuels was bold enough to tell the court that, if it had not been for the Police patrol, he would never have been arrested. He told the magistrate he heard that she was lenient and requested leniency.
The magistrate told Samuels he may have been misled into believing that she was lenient and handed down the sentence.
The Chief Magistrate told the convict she would have sentenced him to five years since, he had previous convictions and planned to elude the Police but, because he was truthful and did not waste the courts’ time, she deducted one year.
Samuels said he committed the act and is not mindful of the sentence he receives as he calculated that he would only be spending three years in prison. ‘ed to the police and the police
