New Anti-doping laws to be introduced in T&T

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – New anti-doping laws are to be introduced in Trinidad and Tobago which would make drug-testing compulsory, the media here have reported.

The Kamla Persad-Bissessar administration is preparing to table the Anti-Doping in Sport Bill 2012, Newsday has reported.
The bill, to be approved by the Cabinet sub-committee scrutinising proposed legislation, the Legislation Review Committee (LRC), is one of several on Government’s legislative agenda for the upcoming months.
A new National Anti-Doping Organisation is expected to be introduced to supervise compulsory drug-testing and police the use of drugs in local sport.
The bill proposes that Port-of-Spain formally adopts the World Anti-Doping Code and the UNESCO Convention on Anti-Doping in Sport.
The World Anti-Doping Code applies to private sport organisations, but the UNESCO Convention on Anti-Doping in Sport makes that code part of international law
The new legislation aims to establish a centralised public body in charge of drug-testing and record-keeping, and was the subject of a recent presentation to the LRC by Sports Minister Anil Roberts.
