GUYANA will go head to head with Trinidad and Tobago as international amateur boxing has been added to the November 30 ProAm card scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle has disclosed that that a six-man team from Trinidad ,comprising four fighters, will arrive in Guyana on November 29 to match gloves with four of Guyana’s best.
“We have said all along that international exposure and experience is needed to assist in the development of our fighters. We are doing just what we said and plan to continue. It will be a costly exercise but the development of the boxers come first,” Ninvalle said.
Guyanese Imran `Magic’ Khan, `Lightning’ Laured Stewart, Steffon Gouviea and Eon Bancroft have been selected to defend the Golden Arrowhead against the Trinidadian invasion.
Bantamweight Khan, a bronze medalist at the ALBA Games, will fight Aaron Cumberbatch while the lighweight Gouviea will face Michael Alexander.
Stewart, a welterweight will clash with Leon Nottingham while middleweight Bancroft faces Declan Calliste. The Trinidad team will be accompanied by a manager and a coach.
It is the first time in the two-year life of the ProAm competitions – a collaboration between GABA, the Guyana Boxing Board, National Communication Network and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, that the amateur segment will take on an international flavour..
We will be speaking to Barbados, Jamaica and other countries in an effort to make this a regular feature,” Ninvalle stated, but reiterated that the price tag can be a prohibitive factor.
GABA recently handed over a four year $49M plan to Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony. The plan has, as a high priority, international exposure for boxers.
The four Guyanese fighters are being prepared by Cuban coach Frank Roldon for this monthend’s invasion. The quartet is stationed at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis gym in Albouystown.
