Guyana looking to trade, investment with Guatemala – as new Ambassador accredited

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar apprised new Guatemalan Ambassador to Guyana, Guisela Atalida Godinez Sazo about the prospects for trade and investment with Guyana, as she presented her Letters of Credence yesterday, with the hope of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

altRelations between Guyana and Guatemala date back to 1992, when ties were first established, and intensified in 2011, when the country’s Minister of External Relations, Carlos Morales visited Guyana and met with his Guyanese counterpart, Minister Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett, who signaled an interest in sending a trade mission and setting up a Honorary Consul in Guatemala. Trade cooperation possibilities also formed part of the discussions.
Yesterday, President Ramotar conveyed to the appointed Ambassador, the fields of interest in which cooperation between the two countries can be bolstered.
“We are actively pursuing policies aimed, not only at developing trade, but also at attracting foreign investment in the main sectors of our economy, including agriculture, mining, manufacturing and the evolving information technology sector,” President Ramotar said.
The Guatemalan private sector, President Ramotar was assured, can play a key role in the aforementioned enterprises, supporting Guyana’s efforts to grow economically in the midst of global challenges.
Ambassador Sazo said Guatemala has a special interest in the Caribbean, with an eye on foreign language, participatory democracy, sustainable economic development social inclusion and human rights.
The holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Legal, and Political Social Sciences served as the Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinaire to Trinidad and Tobago, Panama and Spain. During her tenure at the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she served as Secretary of the National Council of Belize, Assistant Director of the Foreign Policy with Europe, and Person in charge of the Foreign Policy with Mexico.
