Special awards ceremony today for CSEC top performers : …Regional prize-giving set for Anguilla in December

STUDENTS in Guyana have over the years continued to dominate their Regional counterparts in the Caribbean top awards for outstanding performances at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations. The Regional awards were ratified on Thursday last, and a special prize-giving ceremony is scheduled to be hosted in Anguilla this December.
Guyana’s Head of State Donald Ramotar, and Education Minister Priya Manickchand, will today also hold a special awards ceremony to honour the Guyanese CSEC top performers, along with those local top students at the National Grade Six Assessment, and CAPE disciplines.
Sarah Hakh of Abram’s Zuil Secondary School, on the Essequibo Coast, is the winner of the prestigious award for “Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in the Region.”
Hakh wrote 16 subjects and earned Grade I in all 16 disciplines.
Two students, Tamasha Maraj and Deowattie Narine from Bishops’ High are also among the top performers in the Caribbean this year.
Maraj has claimed top accolade as Most Outstanding Candidate in Business Education, with 13 subjects.
Narine claimed the top accolade for the Business stream with 13 Grade Ones,’ including, Biology, Chemistry, Information Technology, Physics, Human and Social Biology and Electronic Technology among others.
Karran Singh, a student of St Rose’s High, also earned Most Outstanding Candidate in Technical Vocational Education across the Region.
Singh earned 12 Grade Ones inclusive of one for Human and Social Biology.
Barbados’ Ilona Loustric, of Harrison College, was awarded for the Best Short Story in the English ‘A’ examination.
Awards for the Most Outstanding Candidates in Visual Arts were claimed by a Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago students.
 Guyanese Sarah Hakh will receive the CSEC School of the Year award for 2012.
The prize package, apart from the prestige, also includes a full scholarship to the University of the West Indies, monetary prizes, plaques and books.
