A GUYANA Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO) representative team from Region Six proved to be too strong for pre-tournament favourites Neal and Massy in the final of this year’s Berbice Chamber of Commerce/CBIS 10/10 softball tournament which they won at the Albion Community Centre ground last Saturday night. Winning the toss and opting to bat first in the fixture that was reduced to 8 overs a side and contested under lights, GUYSUCO scored 69 for 4 from their allotted overs, with Phillips 21 (3×4) and Ally who made an unbeaten 20 (1×6, 1×4), leading their batting, before their bowlers restricted Neal and Massy to 48 for 6.
Both GUYSUCO and Neal and Massy had registered semifinal victories over Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and Demerara Bank Limited (DBL) respectively, while all four semifinalists had defeated Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, Oldendorff Carriers, Karibee Rice and Metro in their quarter-final matches.
The other teams that participated in the softball tournament were New Building Society, Republic Bank: Hand in Hand Insurance, Regional Chairman XI, Edward B. Beharry Group of Companies, Ansa McAl Trading and Banks DIH.
Tournament coordinator Imran Saccoor said the event was a success despite the minor hiccups they faced and thanked the participating teams and sponsors who contributed to making the tournament the success it was.
He revealed that next year’s tournament will be bigger and better, stating that the presentation of the monetary prizes will take place tomorrow evening with a cocktail ceremony at a venue to be decided on by the organisers.
