PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Leg-spinner Samuel Badree has described Trinidad and Tobago’s elimination from the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in South Africa as “heartbreaking”.
The Red Force were sent crashing out in the group stage after a shocking six-wicket defeat at the hands of English County side, Yorkshire.
Badree, also a member of the West Indies team which captured the ICC Twenty20 tournament after beating Sri Lanka in the finals earlier this month, said the players were gutted.
“We were very, very disappointed. We have been training for four to five months,” said Badree in an interview on i955 FM radio.
“Some men didn’t even have an opportunity to hit a ball or even bowl a ball.”
The captain Denesh Ramdin has said that his side were knocked out because of their failure to execute and a lack of mental preparation.
At least five of Trinidad’s leading cricketers were also not part the team’s preparation which included a number of warm-up matches as well as Twenty20 tournaments against leading teams.
“We have been there before, we know the format of the competition so I don’t want to cry over spilt milk,” said Badree
“But it’s very, very heartbreaking for a team with the talent that we have, not to have made it to the main draw,”
In the inaugural edition of the champion’s league in 2009, T&T qualified for the finals but lost to New South Wales.
Last year, they were forced to qualify for the main stage, where they narrowly missed securing a spot in the semi-finals.
“I think on the day we did not execute as we ought to have executed,” said Badree.
“But it’s a learning experience for us and hopefully next time around we will be better prepared and we will be better able to compete.”
