Well-known midwife, Vivinne Abrams fatally struck

WELL-KNOWN midwife, Vivinne Abrams, 59, of Lot 238 Section ‘B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara was killed yesterday morning while on her bicycle to do a ‘home visit’ of a patient at Annandale, when she was struck down by a speeding, over taking Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO) truck which left her for dead at the Railway Embankment at Coldingen.

altPolice reported that at about 11:00 hrs yesterday, on Coldingen Railway Embankment, the driver of motor lorry GHH 5153 was overtaking motor lorry GFF 5112 (another GUYSUCO truck) and in the process struck down the pedal cyclist who was proceeding in the opposite direction.
Abrams was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The drivers of the two motor vehicles are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Meanwhile, sister of the deceased, Marilyn Abrams told the Guyana Chronicle that her sibling had returned home from church service and was on her way to visit a patient at Annandale when she was killed.
Abrams called “Nurse Abrams” and “Sissy” is the neighbourhood midwife and nurse known to almost every household on the East Coast corridor and would usually visit her patients at their home upon requests and delivered numerous babies in and around the community.
Marilyn said that the driver struck down her sister and left her to die and fled the scene while over taking another GUYSUCO truck.alt
However, he was pursued by an eyewitness, who was in a bus on his way home from church exiting the bus and took a taxi and followed the truck driver and while, in the vicinity of Melanie Damishana, also on the East Coast Demerara managed to effect a citizen arrest until the police arrived.
He was handed over to the police and they returned to the scene with the truck driver where investigations were carried out but was also confronted by a group of persons related to Nurse Abrams, who were at the scene looking for her house keys.
A pair of the woman’s slippers was still at the scene and there was a verbal exchange with the driver, who was quickly whisked away from the scene by the police and in reply he told those gathered there that it “was an accident and he did not do it o n purpose” after he was threatened.
The truck driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and had some difficulty in standing up before he was taken away by the police.
Abrams upon impact received severe head injuries and was hurled from her bicycle and landed some distance away, where she bled through her ears and mouth and was transported by a passing taxi driver to the GPHC where she succumbed.
At the home of Abrams, many were there including her sister, Marilyn and her best friend, Kowsilla Beharry called “Aunty Data”, who struggled to maintain their composure yesterday as they fondly spoke of their loved one.
Beharry, who hails from Enmore said that her best friend is gone and was in the process of making arrangements to have a ‘wake’ yesterday afternoon as she openly cried.
Marilyn Abrams told this publication that today her sister was scheduled to go have her “medical” done since her children wanted her to visit them in the United States and would have celebrated her 60th birthday on Old Year’s day.
Abrams was the mother of two, who both reside overseas and her sudden death sent shock waves throughout the communities, she frequented and those who heard of her demise rushed to her residence yesterday.
Abrams’ bicycle was lodged at the Vigilance Police Station.
Nurse Abrams would always ride her bicycle at a moderate speed.
She was a true humanitarian person and well known to almost every household and loved in her community.
