CDC hosting symposium today on disaster risk reduction

THE Civil Defence Commission (CDC), in collaboration with its key partners, will be hosting a symposium today, from 10:00 hrs to 12:30 hrs, at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. It is in observance of International Disaster Risk Reduction Day 2012, to be observed tomorrow, under the theme ‘Women and Girls- the invisible force of Resilience.’
A release said the theme is about drawing attention to the fact that the efforts of women to protect and rebuild their communities before and after disasters are, often, unrecognised and that invisibility is a socio-cultural construct.
“It is also about highlighting that women’s ability to contribute is hindered by lack of inclusion and poor understanding of gender inequality,” the release said.
According to CDC Director General, retired Colonel Chabilall Ramsarup, the main target audience for the symposium will be from primary and secondary schools, University of Guyana (UG), scout groups, youths, volunteers and women’s organisations.
Disaster risk reduction is about understanding personal and environmental risks of a hazard, such as an earthquake, flood, or a hurricane and finding ways to reduce this risk, so that people are not affected.
The symposium will include presentations on what can be done to make women and girls in Guyana resilient to disasters, the role men play in preparing women and girls for disasters and how gender inequality make women and girls more vulnerable to disasters.
In addition, video presentations will be made on disaster risk reduction and unlocking the power of women and a cultural presentation by the CDC volunteers.
As part of the programme, the CDC will be launching its Volunteer Corps, making presentations on the ‘Introduction to the Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps’, an inauguration of the volunteers and outstanding volunteers and training facilitators will be recognised.
The CDC is inviting the public to attend on the occasion which will feature messages from the National Disaster Coordinator, Dr. Roger Luncheon, the Secretary General of the Guyana Red Cross Society, Mrs. Dorothy Fraser and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
