MR. Granger’s admission further evidence PNC owes nation an apology

The Guyana Diaspora Gazette group is shocked at the statements of the leader of the PNCR, Mr. David Granger on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of that party.

Based on the statements appearing in the media attributed to Mr. Granger it is clear that after 28 years of the PNC, the only thing the party is proud of while it was in government is the education sector.
But even this is alarming enough as the education sector was on its death bed in 1992 with our teachers even being forced to buy their own chalk to teach students. When teachers and students themselves were forced to relieve themselves in the bushes, when electricity was only reserved for the privileged and acquiring water was an entire day’s chore to walk several villages away and line up to fill containers.
It appears that Mr. Granger is proud of the fact that our teachers were forced to leave their jobs and go to do menial labour on the several private estates, which President Forbes Burnham had acquired from the state at no cost, including the land where the Congress Place is housed as well as several of the party’s offices across the country. This was in addition to our teachers and other professionals being forced to cut sugar cane on the estates or work on the Hope Coconut Plantation with the prospect of being fired if they did not. Indeed, this is clear evidence as to the great concern and respect the PNC government and Mr. Granger had for those in the education sector back then.
The GDG group views this as the clearest admission by a leader of the PNC of the abject failure of that party, while it was in government. For Mr. Granger to stand up and only be in a position to highlight a few buildings constructed under the PNC dictatorship after well over two decades in government through successive rigged elections is a disgrace. To add insult to injury during this time, hundreds of millions of US dollars were borrowed by the PNC in the process racking up a debt burden which was over three times our GDP. Where did all this money go Mr. Granger?
The release of previously classified files by the CIA which indicated that the PNC government was skimming off thousands of US dollars from Guyanese taxpayers every month through a front company they had created to sustain themselves and the fact that Mr. Granger is proud of this is even more revealing.
Mr. Granger himself was handpicked and placed in the Guyanese military as the PNC political liaison responsible for indoctrination of soldiers. Yet, this very individual has the temerity to stand up in society now and speak about ethics, and project himself as the ultimate professional.
The Guyanese nation will not be fooled and those of us from the Diaspora who were forced to flee Guyana during those dark days when the PNC tormented our nation have a duty to ensure this period is remembered in our history, so the same mistakes are never allowed to be revisited upon our people.
The admission by Mr. David Granger is further evidence that the PNC owes this nation an apology.
