TODAY, the disappointed Guyanese football fraternity will know the reasons why Guyana’s final home game in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers was shifted from the Guyana National Stadium to the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas, when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) sits down with the media.
Guyana were scheduled to face the mighty Mexicans on October 12 here, in their penultimate Group B showdown in the third round of the CONCACAF leg. Guyana’s final game in the group will also be away from home as they oppose Costa Rica in San Jose on October 16.
The move was confirmed two days ago by the CONCACAF website. The CONCACAF website read, “Guyana appealed to FIFA citing a conflict with the originally announced venue of Guyana National Stadium in Providence. The Dynamo said on its website Monday night that it would host the match and the Mexican federation confirmed the venue change Tuesday morning.”
While the local media is still uncertain as to why the venue was shifted, a few things are for certain. The local football fans are stripped of the chance of seeing their team in action once more live and also the likes of Jose Manuel de la Torre who spearheads the Mexicans.
This would also result in a loss for tourism in Guyana and many other aspects.
