JUSTICE Diana Insanally sat in the Criminal Jurisdiction, for the first time since her appointment, when the Demerara Assizes opened on Tuesday.
She is presently presiding over the murder trial of Mahadeo Seewah called ‘Rocky’ who is indicted for the unlawful killing of Bananan Persaud between April 22 and 23, 2007.
Leading Prosecutor Judith Mursalin, in association with other State Counsel Diana Kaulesar, disclosed that she hopes to call eight witnesses to testify.
The judge has the sole responsibility of presiding over the entire criminal sessions since the other assigned judge, Justice James Bovell-Drakes is on 10 weeks leave and is not expected to resume before late December.
Justice Insanally took the salute at the march past and inspected the guard of honour, on Tuesday, during the ceremonial parade by 60 ranks of the Police Tactical Services Unit outside the High Court in South Road, Georgetown.
The pending cases listed, according to the Jail Delivery, include 226 prisoners at the Georgetown Prison awaiting trial, 167 males and 13 females, for the offence of murder.
