Fibre-optic cable thief jailed for 12 months –counsel asked that justice be tempered with mercy

GEORGETOWN Magistrate, Hazel Octive-Hamilton, yesterday sentenced Mohamed Amid to 12 months’ imprisonment after he admitted to stealing 12 metres of fibre-optic cable belonging to the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company Limited.
The charge against Amid stated that, on August 18, he stole 12 metres of fibre- optic cable valued at $300,000., property of GT&T.
Attorney-at-Law, Trenton Lake, who represented the defendant, informed the court that the defendant was left to live on his own after his parents died; and at a tender age, he was living on the streets.
Pointing out that the defendant did not waste the court’s time, Lake asked that the court temper justice with mercy by giving the defendant a lenient sentence.
