I am a regular reader of the Letters Page in our daily newspapers and I have read some very nasty letters. But the letter by M. Maxwell in the Kaieteur News, dated August 27, headlined “Amerindians should beware of what the PPP did in Linden” wins the top prize for vehemence against the PPP.
How an editor would allow such hatred and slanderous statements to be published in his newspaper baffles me.
For the benefit of those readers who did not read this letter, I will state a few of the false and malicious statements made against the PPP, particularly as they relate to Linden and Amerindians.
*“The vindictive PPP decided to punish Linden by raising electricity rates because Lindeners did not vote for them, but the PPP refused”
This is not correct. The increase was a gradual one and Lindeners know fully well who used them.
*“Savage force” was used against unarmed protesters.
While the inquiry will disclose what really happened is this a fair statement from Maxwell?
*“Amerindians were used by the PPP to get their hands on the money from Norway”
It is well known that Amerindians will be some of the main beneficiaries – time will tell.
*“The PPP tried to use the Linden protests to drive a wedge between Amerindians and the Opposition”
The Amerindians know who were the organisers of the protest and who benefited. The organisers did not care who will suffer, and now they are callously trying to shift the blame.
*“Right now there is an agenda to take their lands”
The Amerindians know who want to take their lands
*“This band of bandits controlling the PPP want Amerindians to return to their corrupt and disreputable party because they want to call a snap election to gain maximum power to slash and burn this country”
The Opposition knows that the PPP has not lost the support of the Amerindians.
The Amerindians realise that the Linden protests were organised by the Opposition who are now trying to cast blame on government.
In conclusion, let me put this entire letter in a nutshell.
The organisers of the Linden protest had far bigger expectations: they wanted this protest to move to Agricola and Buxton, then to Georgetown. The whole plan was to cause a national conflagration.
I emphasise the last sentence of Maxwell’s letter: “Amerindians should take heed.”
They must always remember the sinister plan of the organisers – If they cannot govern the country – they will make it difficult for the government in office to govern.
Amerindians should take heed
