R. H. Carr

I remember her in her stately form
Coming to life, far from sleeping,
Her engine a musical rhythm;
Slowly, slowly
Drawing away from the stelling
Moving to mid-river, the channel
And then she’s on her way.

I remember her, sounding her presence,
At every bend of the Demerara
Queen she was, majestic,
Parting the water, gliding on her journey
What a sight!
Georgetown to McKenzie
She drew the curtain to my child’s eyes
As I viewed the handiwork of nature
As I danced in heart to a heart-loving life
R.H. Carr befriended me to the world of vessels.

We came off her at Clemwood where I was born
Where flows the rich black water of beautiful beauty
And as the boat moved away from her side
She sounded her sailing presence and departed.

The last of her I saw was when she took a bend
Disappeared from view
Wonder of wonders, I thought
Beautiful more the songs than the singers
