Guyana’s latest centenarian can still do almost anything –age has little effect on his senses

RAMJOHN Mohamed Khan, called “Majee” and “Aja”, of Aurora Estate, Essequibo Coast, celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday, August 16. Relatives consider the occasion a true milestone, and are elated that their loved one has attained that age. They are optimistic he would celebrate more birthdays.
Healthwise, he is doing well; and except for minor aches, he can still walk, and in fact does chores on his own.
Khan has 13 children, 41 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and 57 great-great-grandchildren.
The retired rice farmer once worked on a sugar plantation, and received a Medal of Service (MS) award from the then President of Guyana, Mr. Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, for his sterling contribution to managing the Co-op Society in Essequibo.
Although Khan has lost hearing in one ear, he has never been deterred from being his usual self. At his age, he can still do almost anything for himself, and even assists with chores like picking up mangoes in the back yard.
Khan is also known for his impeccable memory, and often tells stories of his younger days. He speaks fluent Hindi, was a Maji at the village Masjid, and is well-known in that area.
This centenarian eats whatever meals are prepared. He credits his longevity on Allah and his religion, and travels regularly to Canada, where he usually goes for vacation until it gets cold and he would be forced to return to Guyana.
Relatives opine that at his age he is doing remarkably well, is very active, and can still hold a good conversation. He does things on his own, like taking a shower.
