PLANS for the implementation of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Youth Empowerment Inclusion and Reconciliation Project are moving apace as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud, disclosed at a press conference on Tuesday at the Ministry. According to Persaud the Ministry has been short-listing applicants for interviews to facilitate the selection of youths for the project which seeks to endow 30 youths with skills in seven areas. Its aim is to empower these youths to participate meaningfully in local governance.
Recently a steering board of 16 persons including representatives of the Local Government, Culture Youth and Sport, and Finance Ministries; UNDP; the Regional Democratic Councils (RDC’s) of Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10; and Youth Challenge Guyana was set up to aid in the process of identifying participants for the project.
The board is set to reach on August 23, 2012, to pronounce on the applications as well as the applicants and the dates for the interviews to be conducted with them. He also reported that the ministry is moving ahead to advertise in the print media for a consultant who will be tasked with developing the training modules that will be used in the execution of the project.
The Youth Empowerment Inclusion and Reconciliation Project seeks to empower the youths with skills to ensure their participation in decision making, and to boost their understanding of it and, in so doing, guarantee they make meaningful contribution to the development of their communities and Guyana.
