AMERICANS Allyson Felix (200 winner) and Sanya Richards Ross (400 winner) were two of the Olympians I have followed for sometime now and am elated to the highest in witnessing their victories in their respective pet events at the just concluded 2012 London Olympic Games. For the past two weeks, the level of international competition at the Olympic level has risen to one of its highest peaks ever and it was very educational. Brilliant performances were showcased by winners and non-medal winners…One’s effort must at all times be commended…
A few golden moments were to witness the very first woman from Saudi Arabia (Muslim) competing in the 800 at the Olympic Games; a double amputee from South Africa in the 400; three athletes without a country marching under the International Olympic Committee (IOC) flag; and world junior athletes making it to the podium. One from The Dominican Republic in the 400 (silver) and one from the country of Qatar in the high jump (Bronze. Also, the accomplishment of the men’s 400 event by Kirani James (Grenada) who at only 19 has already won the world youth and junior titles, world champion and now Olympic champion..The pair of American beach volleyball players (Kerri & Misty) with their third consecutive gold medal in that event was a knock out. Unfortunately I can’t continue because of space allocation of the dailies.
I take this moment to extend my gratitude to the entire Guyanese contingent who made representation on behalf of the Golden Arrowhead and hope they would have embraced the experience and use it to continue growing healthy in whichever manner they choose.
Aliann Pompey would have represented Guyana to the best of her potential over the years and as she bows out of competition, I hope Guyana will show its gratitude to this accomplished daughter of the soil.
Much appreciation to corporate Guyana for broadcast sponsorship of the 2012 London Olympic Games via NCN.
