Christians oppose legalisation of homosexuality

THE Christian Community in Guyana on Thursday made clear their position  on homosexuality at a press conference, during which they called on all Guyanese to “roundly reject any move to legalise homosexuality.” A statement from the Christian community emphasised that they express love for everyone who practise homosexuality or are challenged by same- sex attractions. However, they maintain that homosexuality is wrong and  that it is a source of societal dysfunction and demise.
The community believes that homosexuality is an offence to God since “it aims to redefine God-ordained manhood, womanhood, marriage, sex and family and opens our nation to God’s judgment.”
A representative from the Georgetown Ministers’ Fellowship, Loris Heywood, stated: “In order to serve our elusive rendezvous with divinely ordained destiny we have to ensure as a nation that creation structures that God has built into the very fabric of human society are protected, promoted and preserved.”
The body is also calling on the members of the 10th Parliament of Guyana not to pursue the decriminalisation of homosexuality despite  the political and economic pressures that may exist.
The Christian community stressed that people are not born homosexual but rather, choose to live an “unnatural and perverted” lifestyle. According to them, people with homosexual tendencies can be transformed through the intervention of religious teachings.
The Christian Community was represented by heads of the Guyana Evangelical Fellowship, Georgetown Ministers’ Fellowship and Guyana Council of Churches along with heads of the various Christian denominations.
