KINGSTON, Jamaica – Deandra Dottin will create a small piece of history, when the inaugural Regional Women’s Twenty20 Tournament begins next Wednesday here. The West Indies Women’s all-rounder will be playing for Trinidad & Tobago, becoming the first female player to play for two different national teams in her regional career.
This follows the declaration of the squads for the tournament, which features seven teams along with hosts Jamaica, the reigning Regional Women’s Super50 champions.
Dottin, a Barbadian and cousin of West Indies men’s coach Ottis Gibson, will be taking advantage of the West Indies Cricket Board’s rule that allows players to move freely to pursue playing options in regional tournaments.
She has been a regular member of the West Indies Women’s team since she made her international debut four years ago.
The 21-year-old Dottin has played 50 One-day and 39 Twenty20 Internationals for West Indies Women, and holds the World record for the quickest T20I hundred ever, an unbeaten 112 against South Africa during the previous ICC Women’s World T20 staged two years ago in St. Kitts.
At least six West Indies Women’s players will lead their national sides. They are headed by Merissa Aguilleira, the Windies Women’s captain, who will lead Trinidad & Tobago; and World No.1 and Windies Women’s all-rounder Stafanie Taylor, who will captain hosts Jamaica.
The others are Shakera Selman (Barbados), June Ogle (Guyana), Afy Fletcher (Grenada), and Cordel Jack (St. Vincent & the Grenadines).
