JUSTICE James Bovell-Drakes yesterday granted Ganesh Rajnarine bail in the sum of $150,000 each, on two charges of drug trafficking. The grant was on a petition by Savitree Hira, presented through attorney- at-law Ms. Kim Kyte-John after the prisoner was denied pre-trial freedom in the lower court.
In her affidavit in answer, State Prosecutor Rhondel Weaver said, on April 7 last, police ranks went to the home of Rajnarine, at Grant 1806 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
Rajnarine, when contacted, was in front of his yard holding a red and white stripe plastic parcel in his right hand. He, then, informed the police that he would like to use the toilet and, subsequently, ran through the western wooden door of the lower flat of his two-storey house and proceeded past the eastern door before entering a latrine.
Detective Constable Austin ran closely behind Rajnarine and saw him holding the same plastic parcel in his right hand. He, thereafter, came out of the latrine without the bag, saying he was finished.
He was escorted back to the outhouse where, in his presence and that of the other ranks, policeman Austin retrieved the plastic parcel, which, when opened, had a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa.
Several greaseproof paper wrappers were found in the parcel and, when opened, were found to contain a whitish, rock-like substance suspected to be cocaine.
Rajnarine was arrested and taken to Springlands Police Station where the leaves, seeds and stems of the hemp plant were weighed and amounted to 84 grammes, while the weight of the suspected cocaine was 20 grammes.
After he was told of the offence, Rajnarine offered the police $200,000 if they gave him a chance, the court heard.
