PRESIDENTIAL ADVISER on Governance, Ms. Gail Teixeira has said that members of the diplomatic community have been briefed on the issue of misinformation and threats being peddled on the social networking sites, during a meeting between the diplomats and the Head of State. Ms. Teixeira noted also that “photographs posted on some of the sites give people the impression that the faces you are seeing there are the faces of some of the persons who were killed in Linden and in fact they are not. They are photographs relating to uprisings in other parts of the world, including Nigeria. That is not Guyana.”
She said that the issue was raised about the social networking being used “to incite, to confuse, to misinform people, and that was an issue the President said he has raised with the opposition parties: That we need to get the situation back into control so that we can talk in a less charged environment.”
Teixeira noted: “We are a country and a political party and the party in government that has had a lot of experience over the decades. If anything, we can be saying that the achievement of the PPP as a party is that we’ve always tried to give responsible leadership, always. And we have always tried to talk, and talk, and talk.”
The Presidential Adviser said that this continues to be done even in the most difficult times and in the most difficult circumstances, “and that’s an important part of the maturity of the PPP. We do not and would not encourage our people, members or supporters to be wild and to be irresponsible in their behaviour. We are a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic society.”
