AN accident involving a motor car and a motor cycle, at the junction of Camp and Lamaha Streets late yesterday afternoon, has left one man dead and another in a serious condition and suffering broken bones. Dead is Carlos Thomas, 20, an employee of the Guyana Pegasus Hotel, who was at the time, the rider of the motor cycle. He was the son of Superintendent Edgar Thomas of the Guyana Police Force. The injured survivor is Akeem Nelson, 23.
According to reports, around 17:00 hrs yesterday the two young men were approaching the traffic light at the corner of Camp and Lamaha Streets, when they were struck down by a speeding motor vehicle.
They were rushed to the hospital, but Thomas was pronounced dead on arrival. His friend Nelson was admitted in a serious condition, and suffering broken limbs. Relatives said that among the injuries sustained, was a broken leg which had to be implanted with steel.
Meanwhile, Thomas’s fiancée, Amanda, the mother of his 18-month old son, on receiving the tragic news, collapsed and had to be rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPHC. And his mother was also inconsolable, Superintendent Thomas said.
Witnesses said the CG 3603, was heading north along Camp Street when it became involved in a collision with a motor heading east along Lamaha Street. Eyewitnesses said the motorcycle was proceeding slowly at the time. Traffic lights at that junction, which is notorious for accidents, are usually set to flashing amber and red at the weekends.
According to reports, the motor cycle was moving slowly, so as to allow a woman at the traffic light to cross, when it was struck by the motor car. One man from the motor car was said to have been taken into custody, as police continue their investigations.
