A MOTHER and daughter appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday, charged with assaulting each other and the latter faced an additional charge of threatening to poison her mother’s food. The daughter, Anastasia Christian pleaded guilty to both charges, which stated that, on July 7, in North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, she unlawfully assaulted her mother, Jacquelyn Christian and made use of the threat to her.
The charge against the mother said, the same day, she unlawfully assaulted her daughter and she, too, pleaded guilty.
Police Corporal Simone Payne, prosecuting, said the defendants live in one home and, that day, the mother gave her daughter $100 as bus fare to go and collect some money and return it to the mother’s workplace.
However, the daughter did not go on the errand and, when her mother returned home and asked why, the former, with an attitude, said she was asleep.
The prosecutor said, maintaining the attitude, the daughter handed the $100 to her mother and struck her in the face.
The mother became annoyed and rebuked her daughter for being disrespectful, causing them to end up in a scuffle and the daughter then issued the threat to poison her mother’s food if she ever has to cook for her, the court was told.
According to the prosecutor, the mother went to the North Ruimveldt Police Outpost and reported the incident and, when the daughter was arrested, she also made a report against her mother.
The mother told the court her daughter first hit her with the money and because she hit her back, she was cuffed to her face and that started the fight.
The magistrate enquired from the daughter if that is her usual behaviour towards her mother and she responded in the affirmative.
The magistrate then told the mother that she has to take control and be the head and not allow her daughter to disrespect her. She placed both defendants on one year probation, in the hope of repairing the mother and daughter relationship they are supposed to have.
The magistrate made Anastasia apologise to her mother and she did so by hugging her and pledging not to behave in the manner she did ever again.
