President encourages diplomats to help promote tourism

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar, noting that the sector has huge potentials, has challenged the Heads of Guyana’s Diplomatic Missions to help in promoting the country’s tourism product. He encouraged them to accept the task, when addressing them last Monday, at the opening of their three-day meeting at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown.
Mr. Ramotar said they have to look at areas of cooperation in the interest of the Guyanese people, such as in education, housing and health, as well.
In terms of tourism, he said: “We are trying to work and create new alliances, new relationships with the rest of the Caribbean and this is an area, I think, that our Heads of Missions can begin to focus on and work with our Ministry of Tourism because it has huge potential.”
The President said: “We are arranging a trip for you down South in another few days and you will have a glimpse of some of the beauty that this country has.

COMPARABLE
“And I can tell you, as one who has travelled quite extensively in Guyana, there are one or two villages that I have not reached as yet, but I think our tourism product that we have is comparable with any in any part of the world and I have seen a lot of different parts of the world.”
Mr. Ramotar agreed that, in order to make many of these places more accessible, there is need for more infrastructure and arrangements are being made for the diplomats to meet with the Private Sector, to see what ideas they can come up with to help in promoting tourism, which is a new and growing sector in the country, but which, clearly, has tremendous possibilities for our future development.
He maintained that Guyana has a lot to offer internationally and Heads of the country’s overseas Missions can assist in promoting its development.
President Ramotar said the budding tourism industry has been seeing significant strides and Government continues to, aggressively, market the destination internationally with its unique ecological, nature and adventure-based offerings.
