Can the opposition reduce the entire government budget?

DECISION pending in Attorney General’s budget cuts case – as arguments wrapped up on Monday. Chief Justice Ian Chang (ag.) has pledged to ensure that a decision is delivered speedily on the Attorney General’s application to the Supreme Court for an Interim Order to allow the Minister of Finance to access monies cut from the 2012 national budget. This is something most people including myself would never understand why the budget is in court.

Most citizens understand that it’s up to government to produce a budget.
The opposition might have their right to produce and present their own budget, then both sides can work on a compromise.

The opposition also has the right to go along with the budget or debunk it and move a no-confidence motion forcing government to call a snap election.
No one in their right mind would ever think the opposition can reduce certain parts of a government budget.

If the opposition can reduce certain parts of the government’s budget, does this not mean it can reduce the entire government’s budget?
To most citizens, it is insane for this to be in court and most see it as a waste of time and taxpayers’ money.

Can the opposition really reduce the entire government budget?
