Guyana perform outstandingly in the WSK tournament in Canada thanks to GKC

AS THE curtain came down on the 2012 International Karate Daigaku Shoto Camp and World Cup Karate Tournament in Toronto, Canada last evening, Team Guyana put in a stunning performance with the Guyana Karate College (GKC) placing second with 24 gold, 4 silver and 17 bronze, a total of 45 medals ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, who brought third and just behind Ontario that brought first. Young Guyanese Karate sensation, 10-year-old Alliyah Wong led the way for Guyana’s success story with a phenomenal feat, winning every event in her category on her way to copping five gold medals.
The GKC which was led by its Senior Instructor and Vice-chairman Sensei Jeffrey Wong (6th Dan black belt), was particularly proud of its achievements since it was its first World Cup in which  they were participating, and they took a very young team that with the exception of two seniors, only had international experience at the Caribbean and Pan American tournaments.
This first IKD International Daigaku Cup which was held July 7-8 of this year saw delegations from all over the globe compete in both Kata and Kumite events.
Practitioners of karate in all ages vied for the top ranks in traditional Shotokan Karate which saw a series of exciting matches with a demonstration of the physicality and mental toughness that are characteristic of karate practitioners.
