GCB Secretary makes court appearance on perjury charge

SECRETARY of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Anand Sanasie, 46, of Lot ‘G’ Patentia, West Bank Demerara, appeared in court yesterday, charged with perjury. Before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, the indictable charge said, last January 30, in Georgetown, being the deponent in an affidavit for an interim and amendatory injunction for damages in the High Court, in which he is the petitioner and the Attorney General of Guyana, Clive Lloyd and Alfred King are the defendants, he, knowingly, falsely swore that assets of the GCB were in his trust.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Sanjeev Datadin, for the accused, made an application for the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) to be applied.
However, Police Sergeant Alexis David-Hossanah, prosecuting, informed the court that the file is not yet complete and, as such, the application cannot be entertained at this stage.
Datadin then made a request for bail, stating that Sanasie is not a flight risk and had been released on his own recognisance pending investigation until Monday, when he was arrested after being followed by senior police officers.
The lawyer said Sanasie then lodged $100,000 surety at the station and was told to attend court.
The police prosecutor had no objection to the grant of pre-trial freedom and the accused was granted it, for $150,000, until July 26.
