THE terms and conditions offered on loans by the China Eximbank to Guyana are by no means a mystery, contrary to statements made recently by Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. Joe Harmon as reported in yesterday’s Kaieteur News. So said Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, in response to the reports on Harmon’s comments.
Minister Singh pointed out that, on every previous occasion that government contracted a loan from China Eximbank, the relevant loan agreement was tabled in the National Assembly, thereby placing it in the public domain, along with the complete set of terms and conditions.
The same will be done in the case of the loan that will be taken to finance the airport enhancement project, which is currently the subject of discussions between the relevant authorities, and once the loan agreement would have been signed, it will be tabled in the National Assembly like all previous such agreements.
Minister Singh stated that “this latest non-issue was merely being raised as their latest ploy to frustrate the project and to frustrate development more generally in Guyana”, an aim that the Minister said this government will never allow the Opposition to achieve.
