Bartica Student wins inaugural Malta Supreme Chess Tournament

BARTICA Secondary School student Daryl Joseph placed first in the inaugural Guyana Chess Federation (GCF)-organised One-Day Malta Supreme Rapid Chess tournament which was held last Sunday at the Bartica Secondary School. The fifth form science student edged past his nearest rival, second-place winner Julia Do Campo who is a teacher of Three Miles Secondary, with Yusuf Hinds, also of Bartica Secondary placing third.
The round-robin competition took place during the inclement weather which was no threat to the indoor event, leaving the players optimistic about future tournaments which remain a possibility.
All the participants were presented with chess sets as prizes for practice and future competitions.
According to a release from the GCF, Banks DIH’s PRO Troy Peters said: “Banks DIH Limited extends congratulations to all the players for participating in the tournament. We also recognise the outstanding performance of Daryl Joseph who emerged winner of the event”.
He urged the GCF to continue its crusade to take the sport around Guyana and pledged his company’s continued support.
The GCF, in collaboration with Ms Sharon Chow-Chee, Headmistress of Bartica Secondary, specially organised and conducted the one-day event for Bartica chess players – a first for the resuscitated local chess body.
Shiv Nandalall, president of the GCF, extended heartfelt thanks to the sponsor, the Headmistress and the Regional Administration for making the tournament possible and said plans are in the making for an “Introduction to Chess” workshop in Bartica which would target an estimated 50 schoolchildren and teachers during the upcoming annual school vacation.
