Second Annual Mackeson Smooth Moves 3 on 3 basketball tournament launched

… GABA pledges assistance in the development of the tournament
BEVERAGE distribution giant Ansa McAl Trading Limited yesterday morning launched its second annual Mackeson ‘Smooth Moves’ 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall where officials of the sponsors, national basketball federation and the media were present.
Sitting at the head table were: Brands Manager Jamaal Douglas, president of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) David Patterson, Marketing Director Troy Cadogan and Public Relations Officer Darshanie Yusuf, while inaugural champions Pacesetters ‘A’ were present.
Cadogan reported that the inaugural tournament was a highly successful one which had brought a long-term effect to the development of the game and the recreation of grassroots development to the sport in this format.
He explained that a number of facilities were being developed during this period in communities where the tournament was held and as a result a number of new talents were unearthed, adding that the prize money will remain at $1M and the tournament will move from a novelty tournament to one being officially sanctioned by GABA.
According to Cadogan, last year saw some 150 teams compete and this year they are looking for an increased number.
In his remarks, Patterson commended the sponsors for a well-organised tournament and indicated that GABA has sought the permission from the world body for the hosting of this tournament.
He explained that in doing so he was asked to promote the format of the game since it was approved by the world body and as such he pledged the support of the local governing body to the tournament.
Patterson sought the opportunity to lobby for a women’s format of the game since the local women have recently been excellent in representing Guyana and there is need for continued development in such an area.
The tournament will commence in three weeks and teams wishing to register can obtain registration forms in the print media and from advertising agents across the country.
